let me count the ways

I love my husband.

how do I love thee? happy anniversary

I love that he lets me sleep in when he knows I’m exhausted. He greets me with coffee and contains his good mood until I’m ready to meet the world.

I love that I find scraps of paper everywhere with drawings he sketched absent-mindedly. It’s the world’s cutest paper trail.

facing the day with coffee and a good husband

I love that he keeps his eyes peeled on the bus for a seat to open up so that I can sit and read.

I love how he says “ID” when he wants to say “idea”.

I love the way he sees people; not in terms of what they have, but of who they are.

I love that when he breaks a glass, he acts like it’s a big deal, even though it’s just a glass. Because he knows how much I love glassware.

I love the way he raises others up, but never puts himself on a pedestal.

what to look for in a husband

I love that he will always run for the phone, even if he has to cross the entire apartment, because he knows I hate answering the phone.

I love how he will get up from his desk and come over just to hug me.

how to have a successful marriage

I love the way he can dream through his art but be grounded in his life.

I love that he never stops asking how I am, even though he knows this question could easily lead to an intense, lengthy discussion about feelings.

I love his humility, his sincerity, his self-sacrifice, his maturity, his generosity.

I love the ways he is different from me; how crazy he can make me, but how his perspective makes me a more rounded person.

opposites attract

I love the way he automatically opens the door to our apartment for me and waits for me to go in first.

I love how we can be total dorks around each other and do things like high-five after quoting Michael Scott at the same moment.

how to be in love

I love that even if he is annoyed, he never goes for a low blow.

I love the way he looks at me as though we are eternally sharing some delicious secret.

keeping secrets

He is my family. My friend. My person.

In six years, we have held hands in seven countries. We have been serious, we have been silly. We have met scores of dazzling people, and I am always most impressed by you. I will hold your hand wherever I can, for as long as I can. Happy anniversary, darling husband. I love you.

i want to hold your hand

  1. What a touching tribute to your man! So personal and unique. Just like you two must be. (And it’s obvious he loves you, too.) The photographs are beautiful; but the portrait you painted of your husband (and your life together) is just as beautiful. Lucky woman, you are.

  2. Proud isn’t even the right word. You deserve each other and more…because you two ARE “that” couple whom so many of us can look up to (and have). We miss you guys. Dearly. Distance sucks. But you guys don’t, so … it’ll be ok. 😉

Exquisite sentiments, both in phrase and portrait. As Emerson once said, “Who hears me, who understands me, becomes mine, – a possession for all time.” (and yes I quote this often, because I believe it’s never been said better.) Happy Anniversary Aubry’s, and may there be many more to follow…
